Liverpool's new Chinese dragon was welcomed to the city with an eye-opening ceremony in Chinatown last night. The traditional ceremony was performed by students at Liverpool’s Hung Kar Kung Fu school, based on Bridport Street in the city centre.
People lined the streets to give their blessing to the new brightly-coloured dragon head ahead of Chinese New Year. Before a new dragon is used in a performance, it is customary for them to have their eyes opened, and effectively be “brought to life”.
A new hand-crafted dragon has been imported from China to help Liverpool welcome in the Year of the Monkey. Golden Dragon have provided the chinese dragon, it's the longest dragon in the UK at 105 ft (32 meters) long, it takes 14 men to carry it and is made by a family who have been in the industry for over 100 years, passing their techniques down through the generations. There was also a fire cracker display to awaken the ancient beast.
